Message from Cynthia Lacasse, Programme Officer: Canadian Commission for UNESCO

Dear partners,

The Canadian Commission for UNESCO is pleased to announce that the Toolkit for Municipalities, Organizations and Citizens - Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination is now available! The Web page allows you to download the complete Toolkit or to select only the sections you wish to print.  Please note that a printed version of the Toolkit will be sent to each designated CCMARD contact of signatory municipalities as well as to CCMARD official partners later in March.  A summary of the Toolkit, for distribution to your colleagues and local partners, is also being finalized.  I will let you know when it is available.

The Toolkit provides practical information to support the work of municipalities and their partners in strengthening their local initiatives and policies against racism and discrimination. It includes:

  • Practical Information on how to join the Coalition, develop and implement a Plan of Action, monitor your community’s progress, engage youth, collaborate with Aboriginal communities, and much more;
  • Examples of Good Practices documenting promising municipal initiatives linked to the Ten Common Commitments and offering practical advice to advance the Coalition;
  • Useful Tools such as examples of press release and media advisory, examples of resolutions adopted by City Councils, samples of Plans of Action, and many other tools;
  • Additional Resources about international and national days/weeks/months, awards, funding, media resources (many of them free) as well as a list of films related to the Ten Common Commitments prepared by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB);
  • The Canadian Commission for UNESCO wishes to underline the contribution of the Racism-Free Workplace Strategy (Labour Programme - HRSDC) for its support to the development and printing of this Toolkit.

The Canadian Commission for UNESCO also wishes to thank the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, the Canadian Association of Statutory Human Rights Agencies, the National Film Board of Canada, Human Rights Commissions in Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan, as well as municipalities and partners that have contributed their experiences and expertise to the realization of this Toolkit.

We hope you will find this new resource useful!

Regards,

Cynthia Lacass
